Hiking the Denis Bay Trail to Oppenheimer Beach in Virgin Islands National Park
Distance: 0.5 miles / 0.8 km
The Denis Bay Trail in Virgin Islands National Park is a hidden side trail off the very short and easy Peace Hill Trail that leads to a beautiful, typically quiet North Shore beach known as Oppenheimer Beach!
That said, Oppenheimer Beach is, by and large, one of the quietest North Shore beaches on St. John, as few even know about the hidden Denis Bay Trail—not to mention, taxis often don’t stop at the trailhead when picking visitors up in Cruz Bay.
It’s for all these reasons that the Denis Bay Trail and Oppenheimer Beach can be one of the best ways to escape the crowds in Virgin Islands National Park, especially during the busy spring travel season on St. John!
Denis Bay Trailhead Parking
Parking for the Denis Bay Trail is located in the same small parking lot as the Peace Hill Trail, directly off North Shore Road.
That said, the Peace Hill Trail typically gets busy by mid-morning and throughout the day, but compared to all the other trails and beaches across the North Shore, it will never be as busy as the ones that taxis typically take visitors, like Trunk or Cinnamon Bay.

Hiking Checklist - Virgin Islands
Here is a complete list of must-have things that you will want for any hike in Virgin Islands National Park.
Hiking the Denis Bay Trail
The Denis Bay Trail begins at the Peace Hill Trailhead, but it doesn’t follow the Peace Hill Trail long before it branches to the right toward Oppenheimer Beach.
Denis Bay-Peace Hill Junction
After just a few steps, the Denis Bay Trail splits away from the much more obvious path that leads to the top of Peace Hill.
Once here, go right to begin the nearly all-downhill hike to the beginning of Oppenheimer Beach, about 0.2 miles (0.3 km) away.

Once on the true Denis Bay Trail, there are no more junctions or side trails to look for.
Simply follow the most obvious path downhill, and Oppenheimer Beach will open up at the very end.
This stretch between the Peace Hill Trail and Oppenheimer Beach loses about 125 ft. (38 m) of elevation.
This is where Oppenheimer Beach can start to be seen through the trees for the first time!
Oppenheimer Beach
The end of the Denis Bay Trail is the far western end of Oppenheimer Beach, near Perkins Cay, straight offshore.
The beach near Perkins Cay is one of the best and most protected stretches of shoreline on Oppenheimer Beach for swimming, but my personal favorite spots are just around the corner to the right (east).
This is the far eastern end of Oppenheimer Beach and my favorite place to escape the crowds in an otherwise very busy area of the North Shore on St. John and Virgin Islands National Park!
